A musical adaptation of “Heathers,” the 1988 cult classic film about a teenager entangled in a ruthless clique and a relationship with a murderous boyfriend, will arrive in Toronto next summer for its Canadian professional premiere.
The production is one of eight bonus shows Mirvish announced Wednesday. They will complement the company’s mainstage and off-Mirvish seasons, which were both revealed earlier this year.
“Heathers the Musical,” which has previously run in London’s West End and is currently playing off-Broadway, will be mounted at the Royal Alexandra Theatre from July 27 to Aug. 29, 2027.
The seven additional shows in the lineup include remounts of productions that have previously played in Toronto.
“The Who’s Tommy,” featuring music by Pete Townshend and direction by former Stratford Festival artistic director Des McAnuff, will return to the city from Jan. 26 to Feb. 1, running at the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre. The rock opera famously played at Toronto’s Elgin Theatre in 1995, featuring a Canadian cast that subsequently took the show across the country.
In March 2027, Mirvish will host return engagements of the Sara Bareilles musical “Waitress” and “Beetlejuice,” based on the Tim Burton film of the same name. Both shows will run at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
Later in the spring, the company will present a two-week run of “The Wiz,” an all-Black musical retelling of “The Wizard of Oz,” with a funk-, rock- and soul-inspired score. The production, which previously received a Broadway revival two years ago, will run at the CAA Ed Mirvish Theatre.
Also programmed for the same theatre are the dance show “Riverdance 30 – The New Generation”; a revival of “The Bodyguard,” based on the 1992 film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner; and an encore run of the Tony-winning musical “Hadestown.”
Most of the musicals in the lineup will be non-union tours, which typically feature smaller, scaled-down designs compared to a show’s original production. In a press release, Mirvish said tickets to the upcoming shows will go on sale at a later date.
The company’s 2026-27 mainstage season will begin later this month. It includes new musical adaptations of “The Karate Kid” and “13 Going on 30.” The off-Mirvish season, which features five productions, will run from November to May.
