Mercedes-Benz is recalling more than 36,000 sedans and SUVs manufactured between 2019 and 2026 because of a safety issue that could cause parked vehicles to roll away.
According to a recall notice published by Transport Canada, certain vehicles are vulnerable to moisture entering in the driver-side door lock, causing corrosion to the microswitch. As a result, the microswitch could fail to engage the parking brake or automatic parking feature when the door is opened.
“If this happens, the vehicle could roll away,” the notice said.
The defect could also cause the radio or interior lights to stay on after exiting the vehicle.
“A parked vehicle that rolls away could create the risk of an injury or a crash,” the notice warned.
The recall affects 2019-26 vehicle models in the A-Class, C-Class, CLA-Class, CLE-Class, GLA-Class, GLB-Class and GLC-Class.
Mercedes-Benz will notify impacted owners by mail and advise them to take their vehicle to a dealership to replace the driver-side door lock. Owners can also check their vehicle status online.
To reduce the safety risk, the German automaker recommends that drivers always use the parking brake when parking.
A similar recall was also issued in the U.S., where the Department of Transportation estimated that over 310,000 vehicles are affected.
