FREDERICTON – New Brunswick officials say residents who live near waterways should act now to protect themselves and their property.
The province’s emergency measures organization says the lower Saint John River basin is full and approaching flood stage.
The emergency management agency says residents should have a plan to evacuate if needed and be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.
The agency is forecasting floods Tuesday that could affect Fredericton and nearby Gagetown.
It’s also forecasting flood warnings for Maugerville and Jemseg.
Forecasts also predict a flood watch for the Quispamsis-Saint John area and advisories for five other locations.
“Now is not the time to be out on waterways or near the banks of rivers and streams,” the agency says.
“It is dangerous as currents are fast, the water is cold and it is carrying debris and there is an elevated risk of being swept away.”
