Thousands of soccer fans were in attendance at LeBreton Flats Park on Saturday afternoon, looking on as Canada’s historic World Cup run came to an end more than 2,400 kilometres away in Houston.
The free watch party for the match against Morocco in the Round of 16 — the furthest the Canadian men have ever reached in the tournament — was hosted by Heritage Canada in partnership with the City of Ottawa.
Canada came in ranked No. 30 in the world while Morocco was No. 6, but there was still hope of an upset for Canadian fans watching on the big screen at LeBreton after the first 45 minutes ended without a goal.
But it was the Moroccan fans who got to do all the cheering in the second half as their side scored in the 50th and 82nd minutes before adding another goal in stoppage time.
Ottawa Citizen photographer Spencer Colby was at LeBreton, capturing the crowd’s reactions as the game unfolded.
