‘Severe’ thunderstorms, heavy rain forecast for capital region

Environment Canada has issued a “special weather statement” Thursday, cautioning the possible arrival of “severe thunderstorms” bringing up to 40 mm of rain starting this morning and lasting through early this afternoon.

“Showers continue as a strong low pressure system approaches the area,” the agency says.

“There is a potential for severe thunderstorms late this morning or early this afternoon with heavy rain and strong wind gusts being the primary threats.”

The forecast is for winds out of the southeast at about 30 km/h, gusting to 60 late Thursday morning.

Thursday’s high is forecast at 20 C, with the humidex making it feel like 25.

Thursday night is expected to be cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of showers, including a risk of thunderstorms early in the evening. The low is expected to be 15 C.

Friday’s outlook is for a 60 per cent chance of showers in the afternoon with risk of more thunderstorms and winds gusting to 50 km/h gusting to 50.

The high is forecast at 19 and the low 12.

There’s a 30-40 per cent chance of showers for the weekend, with high temperatures ranging from 19 to 24 C by Sunday.
