TORONTO – Sherritt International Corp. says it has received a license from the U.S. government authorizing the purchase and delivery of fuel to its Moa mine and processing operations in Cuba.
The company says the fuel license is the first of a series of emergency licenses that will be necessary for it to be able to restart operations at Moa as well as processing and refining in Canada.
Sherritt says it submitted its requests for the emergency licenses in co-ordination with Gillon Capital, which is seeking a controlling interest in the miner.
Sherritt shut down operations at its Fort Saskatchewan refinery in Alberta earlier this year after running out of the feed inventory it receives from Moa.
Operations at the Moa joint venture were paused as Cuba faced fuel shortages after the U.S. cut off access to oil from Venezuela in January.
Sherritt says it is working to finalize the initial fuel shipment, which is expected to be in the fourth quarter of this year.
