Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a 32-year-old man was left with life-threatening injuries after falling from a second-floor landing in a ByWard Market parking garage while fleeing police early Saturday.

In an email to the Ottawa Citizen, the Ottawa Police Service said officers responded “to a call at a commercial business in the ByWard Market just before 3:30 a.m. for an unknown person who had entered the premises.

“As officers responded, the individual fled, and in the process, sustained serious injuries.”

“The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified and has invoked its mandate,” the statement added. “Any further questions regarding the incident should be directed to the SIU.”

The Ottawa Paramedic Service confirmed to the Citizen that it responded to a parking garage at 30 York St. at about 3:40 a.m. and found a man with critical, life-threatening injuries.

He was transported to an Ottawa trauma centre.

The SIU investigates police interactions that may have resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm and/or sexual assault.

Three SIU investigators were assigned to Saturday’s case in Ottawa.
