Environment Canada has ended a red-level tornado warning for areas southwest of London that was in effect for several hours late Thursday afternoon and into the evening.
The earlier tornado warning, which was in effect for Chatham-Kent and Rondeau Park, is now a yellow, severe-thunderstorm warning.
Despite the tornado risk being downgraded, the storm can still cause damage, Environment Canada warns.
“Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts and up to quarter size hail,” it wrote.
“Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail. If you hear roaring wind, see a funnel cloud, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately.”
According to Environment Canada’s colour-coding system, red warnings are rare and reserved for “very dangerous and possibly life-threatening weather” that could cause “extreme damage and disruption.”
Yellow warning denote hazardous weather that may cause damage, disruption or health impacts. Those impacts, however, are deemed moderate, localized, and/or short-term.
A large swath of Southern Ontario is currently under yellow watches or warnings for severe thunderstorms.
