The former Hudson’s Bay store at a Markham mall will soon be home to a massive new Asian supermarket.
Canada’s largest Asian grocery store chain T&T announced on Friday that it’ll be relocating its Unionville, Ont., store to the 68,000-square-foot space at CF Markville mall on Hwy. 7, with an opening eyed for 2028.
T&T claims the new store will be the largest Asian grocery market in Markham, adding that the lower level of the former Hudson’s Bay space will provide an additional 18,000 square feet over its existing location in Unionville.
“Markham has been a key part of T&T’s story, and we see tremendous opportunity to continue investing in this community,” said Tina Lee, CEO of T&T Supermarket, in a company news release.
“Unionville has been a wonderful home for us for the past 14 years, and we are proud of everything we have built together with our colleagues and customers. As our customers’ needs continue to grow, this bigger store at CF Markville will strengthen our presence in the market, create an even better experience for our customers, and bring more jobs to the local community,” she added.
The Asian supermarket chain was founded in Vancouver in 1993 and has nearly 40 locations in Canada and the U.S. The company noted the new CF Markville location will be the chain’s 18th in the province, with another set to open at RioCan Empress in North York.
The supermarket provides a wide variety of fresh produce and meat, along with prepared Asian meals and baked goods. The chain’s stores also offer Asian beauty sections, it said.
The former Hudson’s Bay store at CF Markville was the one of 80 across the country to shut its doors last year as the longtime Canadian retailer winded down operations after determining its $1.1-billion debt was too insurmountable.
The department store spent the remainder of the year auctioning off some of its 4,400 pieces of art and artifacts, as well as selling leases or handing them back to landlords.
