A rugby park in Ottawa’s west end is closed after a structure on the property was damaged in a fire Friday morning.
Ottawa Fire Services said it responded to Twin Elm Rugby Park in Richmond at around 9:37 a.m. on Aug. 28 after receiving a call about “heavy black smoke coming from a structure.”
When firefighters arrived at the rugby park in the 4000 block of Twin Elm Road, “alarms were sounding and heavy black smoke was coming from the structure,” a news release said.
Crews immediately shut off several large propane tanks located beside the building.
“Firefighters initiated a fast attack and entered the smoke-filled structure. Crews located the flames inside a mechanical room and opened sections of the building to expose and extinguish the fire,” the release said.
The fire was declared under control at 10:08 a.m. Nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
In a social-media post, Twin Elm Rugby Park said the facility would remain closed until further notice.
“As many of you have heard, there was a fire at Twin Elm Rugby Park this morning. Everyone is safe,” the post said. “We’ll keep the rugby community updated as things evolve.”
The fire department completed “extensive ventilation operations” to remove the large amount of smoke from the structure and an investigator was dispatched to determine the fire’s cause and point of origin.
OFS also established a “fire watch” with a truck remaining at the scene to monitor for any flare-ups.
