Youth seriously injured in dirt bike-SUV collision on Highway 17

A 12-year-old was taken to hospital by air ambulance after the dirt bike they were riding collided with a vehicle on Highway 17.

The incident occurred at about 5 p.m. on Monday, May 4, at the intersection of Highway 17 and the Algonquin Trail crossing in the Whitewater Region, the Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release May 5.

The youth was crossing the highway on a dirt bike, and was being accompanied by a parent riding with a youth on a separate dirt bike, when their vehicle collided with a westbound SUV.

The youth was first taken to hospital by land ambulance before being moved to an Ottawa hospital by Air Ornge, police said.

The 12-year-old’s injuries were later determined to be serious but non-life-threatening, while the driver of the SUV and a passenger were not injured.

The Whitewater Region is located about 125 kilometres northwest of Ottawa.
