Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, when a crossing guard displays a red and white stop sign, drivers, including cyclists, must stop before reaching the crossing and must remain stopped until all persons, including the school crossing guard, have cleared the entire roadway — not just the half drivers are on — and it is safe to proceed, according to the 2023 Ottawa Safety Council Crossing Guard Guide.
