Back-to-school shopping has become one of the biggest spending events of the year for Canadian families. Between the tech, running shoes, backpacks, lunch gear, fall jackets and a wardrobe to replace everything your child outgrew over the summer, it’s easy to spend hundreds, if not thousands, before the first school bell rings.

The challenge is that many families are approaching this school year under financial pressure. The cost of groceries, housing and other essentials has left less room in the budget, yet parents naturally want to give their children the very best start. That’s a difficult combination, and it’s why back-to-school shopping can quickly become emotional spending instead of intentional spending.
