East end power outage leaves approximately 30,000 customers in the dark

A large swath of the east end of the city has been plunged into darkness due to a power outage.

According to Toronto Hydro, around 30,000 customers are without electricity in an area bounded by Lawrence to the north, Woodbine Avenue to the west, Cherry Beach to the south and Jarvis Street to the east.

The utility said in a social media post that the outage was due to a “loss of supply” from Hydro One.

A series of thunderstorms moved through the GTA on Wednesday night, with Environment Canada warning of wind gusts up to 100 kilometres an hour, which could lead to damaged tree branches and downed power lines.

Toronto Hydro’s website shows repairs are underway but the majority of customers likely won’t see a return of power until early Thursday morning.
