OTTAWA—The trade war with the United States has descended into open acrimony, with Ontario’s premier trading personal insults with Donald Trump as Prime Minister Mark Carney warns that the U.S. president’s new tariff threat on Monday shows Washington wants to “destroy” major Canadian industries like the auto and steel sectors. 

The federal government is now planning to unveil its response to the latest round of import duties imposed over the weekend on Tuesday, along with measures to support businesses and workers impacted by the fallout, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed.
