“& Juliet,” the bubbly jukebox musical that remixes the chart-topping songs of Max Martin and asks what if Juliet didn’t kill herself at the end of Shakespeare’s iconic romantic tragedy, will end its Toronto run later this summer.
Mirvish Productions, which is currently presenting the show at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, announced Wednesday that the musical will close on Aug. 30, by which time it would have played for 309 performances.
The production, which features a Canadian cast, began performances in December 2025, opening to strong reviews from local critics. It marked the second time the show was presented in Toronto and came after a sold-out, pre-Broadway run.
As of Wednesday, approximately 220,000 people have seen the production, according to Mirvish, with that figure expected to grow to 350,000 by the end of the run.
“‘& Juliet’ has proven to be one of the city’s all-time favourite shows,” said producer Hannah Mirvish in a press release. “In 2022, when it had its North American premiere here prior to opening on Broadway, audiences embraced it in such a joyful way, we knew we had to bring it back.”
This Canadian production cost just under $6 million to finance. By the time it closes, it is expected to have entirely recouped.
The show features a book by Canadian writer David West Read, best known for his work on the Emmy-winning comedy series “Schitt’s Creek,” and is directed by Luke Sheppard.
“& Juliet” continues to run on Broadway, where it’s one of only a few new musicals to open in recent years and recoup its investment. A North American touring production, which began in 2024, is also still running.
