Some coffee-loving Canadians could soon cash in on a massive settlement in a class-action lawsuit filed against Keurig.
The company has agreed to pay a $1.85-million settlement, following accusations that Keurig misled its consumers by making single-serve pods and brewing systems seem recyclable.
The settlement agreement is a “compromise,” rather than an admission of wrongdoing, according to the latest notice issued by claims administrator Eqitas on Monday.
In a court document from October, Keurig denied liability, asserting the conduct was legal.
Compensation is available to anyone who purchased either product in Canada from June 8, 2016 until Dec. 8 when the settlement was approved.
How much could you receive?
The court has approved legal fees that amount to $634,845.17, plus taxes which will be deducted from the $1.85-million settlement. However, the rest of the money will be paid out to eligible members of the class:
- For pods: without proof of purchase, consumers can receive up to $7 per claim. With a receipt or other way of proving the purchase, Canadians can get up to $50 per claim.
- For brewing systems: With proof of purchase for at least one brewer or pod, can receive up to $25 per claim.
All claims must be submitted online before no later than 11:59 p.m. on July 8. The claim can be received either by cheque or e-transfer.
