Weather: ‘Yellow’ alert issued for possible ‘severe thunderstorms’

Environment Canada has issued a “Yellow” alert about possible severe thunderstorms in the capital region capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

The caution lists hazards such as wind gusts up to 110 km/h, hail, rainfall amounts of up to 30 to 50 mm over a few locales and “risk of a tornado.”

“Thunderstorms are expected to develop and track over the area this afternoon and possibly early this evening,” the agency says.

Residents are urged to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Meanwhile, “local smoke” from forest fires continues to affect the air quality Saturday.

The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) reading for Saturday afternoon and evening is “7, High Risk.”

Saturday’s looking cloudy with a 40-per-cent chance of showers early in the day and and a risk of a thunderstorm.

The high should be around 23 C, “feeling like 31” due to Humidex and a UV index of 3 or moderate.

There’s a 40-per-cent chance of showers early Saturday evening with risk of a thunderstorm and more local smoke. The low is expected to be 14 C.

Sunday looks like clearing skies with gusty winds, a high near 23 C, with a UV index of 7 or high.

The (AQHI) reading for Sunday is “2-Low risk” in the afternoon, falling to “1-Low risk” later in the day.

Sunday night looks clear, with a chilly low of 12 C.

Monday starts clear and sunny with a high of 25 C, but clouds are expected to move in through the day with a 40-per-cent chance of showers.

The low is expected to be about 17 C.
